Dr. Adam Watson – Hip, Knee and Shoulder Specialist

Adam is an orthopaedic surgeon Hobart, who specialises in Shoulder, Hip and Knee Surgery.

He provides subspecialist services in arthroscopic and open treatment of knee and shoulder sporting injuries. He also offers complex hip, knee and shoulder replacement surgery, including revision surgery and Direct Anterior Approach Hip replacement.

He offers treatment for public patients at the Royal Hobart Hospital and private patients at Calvary healthcare.

Training

Mr Watson completed a 12 month Shoulder and Upper Limb fellowship in Geelong, Victoria, under the guidance of Professor Richard Page. This included comprehensive arthroscopic and open treatment of a broad range of shoulder and elbow conditions. This was followed by a 6 month Trauma and Arthroplasty (Hip and Knee replacement) fellowship in Geelong, prior to moving to Canada.

In Toronto, Adam has completed a 12 month Sports and Arthroscopy fellowship, focusing on the knee and shoulder. This is part of the prestigious University of Toronto Orthopaedic Sports Medicine program, www.utosm.com. He has gained skills to treat complex and multiple ligament knee injuries and further enhanced his arthroscopic treatments of complicated shoulder pathology.

Adam spent a further year at the University of Calgary, doing a high volume fellowship in Complex Hip and Knee Arthroplasty. This included specific training in the Direct Anterior Approach (DAA) Hip replacement and complex revision (re-do) procedures.

Surgical Education

Adam is keenly interested in enhancing the training of surgeons. He completed his Masters in Surgical Education, whilst working in Toronto. His thesis created a peer-reviewed list of Entrustable Professional Activities for Orthopaedic training. This will enhance the development of curriculum for surgical training. His other research involves the scapular involvement in rotator cuff repairs and a randomized controlled trial into fixation of hip fractures.

About Adam

Adam grew up in Melbourne, Australia. He graduated from his medical studies at the University of Tasmania with First Class Honours in 2005. He completed his Orthopaedic Surgery Training program in Victoria, Australia in January 2015, with placements in both regional and metropolitan centers.

He is married to Dr Jane Mills, a breast and endocrine surgeon from Hobart. They have three wonderful children; Rose, Jock and Lily, who love enjoying their adventures in the bush. Adam and his family spend their weekends mountain biking, trail running and cycling through the wilderness. In Winter they love skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing.
